Ukdiche Modak Recipe | Ganesh Chaturthi Special Dessert

Modak is a steamed sweet dumpling that is made up of an outer covering of rice flour dough and the sweet juicy filling of jaggery and fresh coconut. It is a very popular and relished sweet during the Ganesh Utsav in Maharashtra and a favourite of Lord Ganesha.

Coconut is a good source of healthy fat and jaggery is a good source of energy and it together with the rice flour outer and filling of coconut make it a healthy carb and healthy fat food.

Ganesh Utsav is incomplete without the modak Prasad. There are modaks made with the same filling but fried instead of steamed. Here we have got you the recipe of the delicious modak recipe.

Ingredients:

For Outer Dough:

  • Rice Flour: ½ Cup
  • Ghee: 1 Tsp
  • Salt: ½ Tsp

For Filling:

  • Grated Jaggery: ¼ Cup
  • Grated Coconut: ½ Cup
  • Ghee: 1 Tsp
  • Cardamom powder: ½ Tsp
Method:

For Outer Dough of Modak:

  1. To prepare modak dough, boil 1 cup of water in a deep non-stick pan.
  2. Add ghee and salt, mix well, and allow to boil.
  3. Once the mixture is boiled add rice flour and mix it quickly with a spoon.
  4. Once the whole mixture starts coming together, switch off the gas and keep the mixture aside for 15 minutes.
  5. After 15 minutes, start kneading the dough with your palm
  6. Once the dough is perfectly kneaded, divide the dough into equal portions.
  7. Cover it with a damp cloth and keep it aside.

For the Filling of Modak:

  1. Heat a deep non-stick pan, add jaggery, coconut, and ghee. Cook the mixture for 5 minutes.
  2. Once the mixture is completely cooked, sprinkle cardamom powder on it and mix it well.
  3. Remove the mixture to a plate and set aside to cool slightly.
  4. Once the mixture is slightly cooled, divide the filling into equal portions and keep aside.

 Assembling of Modak:

  1. Take a portion of dough and shape it into a smooth round ball.
  2. Flatten the dough with your fingers to form a disc shape.
  3. Give it the shape of a bowl by pressing the edges & forming a dent.
  4. Place a small portion of the filling at the centre of dough.
  5. Press edges to create pleats.
  6. Get pleats together in the centre and seal them well.
  7. Close the top by pressing softly and make it pointed.
  8. Repeat the same steps to assemble all other modaks.

Steaming of Modak:

  1. Heat water in a steamer and add a banana leaf to the steamer plate.
  2. Place the steamer plate inside the steamer and put modaks on a banana leaf.
  3. Steam on medium flame by closing the top of steamer for 12 minutes.
  4. Your Modak are ready to serve.
