Today, is the World Health Day. But what does “Good Health” really mean? For some being free from disease is healthy, for some being at the desired body weight is healthy whereas for some being active is healthy.
Health actually encompasses two aspects:
a) Physical Well-being
b) Mental Health
Let’s look at what Physical Well-being means?
- Maintaining a Healthy Weight: Obesity increases the risk of lifestyle diseases & hence its important to have a Body Mass Index (BMI) less than 22.9. BMI is calculated as Weight (kgs) / Height (m2). A qualified nutritionist or dietitian can guide you about a balanced diet & help achieve your weight loss goals. It is important to remember that losing weight is a journey and we need to be patient & consistent.
- Body Composition Analysis: It is the ratio of multiple factors that make up our weight which includes the amount of fat, visceral fat, muscle mass, water content, bone weight, etc. The ratio of these is different for men & women. One needs to ensure that our parameters are in the desired range.
- Exercise: Exercise has to be a part of our daily schedule just as eating, sleeping or working are. Exercise will help us have a better body composition, healthy weight, de-stress & delay the onset of lifestyle diseases. A minimum of 45 minutes of exercise is what one should aim for.
Mental Health:
In today’s competitive world, the level of stress has increased tremendously. A well-balanced diet, exercise & adequate sleep will help us take care of our body’s requirement. If we are unable to cope with the stress levels, it is advisable to seek professional help. We need to enjoy our life, feel safe and secure and bounce back with positivity if faced with trying times.
A little bit of discipline along with guidance can do wonders to our health. This World Health Day, let’s pledge to be healthy and make lifestyle changes for our own betterment.
