A recent report by FitBit reveals that “India is one of the most sleep deprived country”. Another study states that 32% Mumbaikars sleep past mid-night. Many of us can relate to this fact. Justifications around this fact can be many including long working hours, long travel time to workplace, helping children with their studies or simply being busy with your smartphones. On the other hand, India is among the top 5 early rising nations in the world.
Sleep Vs Calories:
Multiple studies have proven that people who have stayed up late tend to consume around 400 extra calories.
Sleep-Hormone Correlation:
Lack of sleep releases a hunger hormone called Ghrelin. What is Ghrelin? It is a hormone which makes us feel hungry. The cells in the stomach release Ghrelin when empty and decrease the secretion of Ghrelin when the stomach is stretched (full, post meals). Levels of Ghrelin are inversely related to the number of hours of sleep. This means:
Lack of Sleep = High Levels of Ghrelin = More Hunger
Sleep deprivation also affects another hormone called Leptin. Leptin is a hormone that inhibits food intake and makes you feel full. Number of hours of sleep are directly related to levels of leptin, which implies:
Lack of Sleep = Low Levels of Leptin = Lack of Satiety
To summarise, when you sleep less (< 7 hours), your hormones play havoc in your body. You not only feel fatigued but you also eat more and are still famished. All this results in weight gain with no obvious gaps in the eating habits.
