Eating Wisely in a Sedentary Lifestyle

Ever wondered if your lifestyle is good or bad? Simply answer the following 5 questions and if the answer to 3 or more questions is a “Yes”, it implies that you need to take care of your health.

1. Do you exercise for less than 30 mins per day or less than 4 days in a week?

2. Do you spend most of your time sitting, reading, watching television or using your mobile phone?

3. Is your BMI (Weight / Height in meters2)> 23?

4. Do you already suffer from any of the following hypertension, diabetes, fatty liver, hypercholesterolemia?

5. Do you experience fatigue, lethargy or irritability very often?

If you have answered a “Yes” more than 3 times, it is time to get up and work towards improving your health. Exercising atleast 30 minutes per day, 5 days a week is non-negotiable. Listed below are some diet tips to help you.

1. Begin your day with a sumptuous breakfast: Eat your breakfast within an hour of waking up. Breakfast provides your body with the fuel that it needs for a long day ahead. It is like fuelling your car before a long drive. What happens to your car without fuel is what happens to your body without breakfast. Without a sumptuous and nutritious breakfast, you are irritable and tired all day. Note of caution: Stay away from breakfast bars / sugary cereals and instead opt for healthy options like traditional veg upma, veg poha, veg paratha (low fat) with a cup of milk or a bowl of curd or may be an egg roll.

2. East at regular intervals: Eating at regular intervals assures your body of regular energy availability, which helps improve your metabolic rate. This also reduces the chances of you having hunger pangs or having an urge to eat junk food since you feel full most of the time. Ensure you eat wisely; opt for fruits, coconut water, almonds, walnuts as snacking items.

3. Have an early dinner: Remember what our parents used to do? Eat dinner at sunset time. It implies, we eat our dinner sometime around 7 pm. This gives our body ample time to digest the food completely before we sleep. People call this “skipping dinner”, I call it having an “early dinner”.

4. Do not fall prey to “Crash Diet”: The next time you hear the word “Crash Diet”, remind your brain of the word “Danger”. Though we sometimes suggest it in cases where people hit a plateau in the weight loss journey, it is monitored and given only for a short period. Do not criticize your body. You have been neglecting it for so long. Don’t rush for immediate results or quick fixes. Don’t be harsh on yourself. Crash diets not just deprive your body of nutrients but they make weight loss even more difficult.

In a nutshell, Exercise !! – there is no escaping this. Eat well, eat on time, nourish your body…nurture it and give it some time to heal; recover and then expect wonders!!
